While web designers are familiar with the terms User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX), there is a significant difference between these two concepts. 

This article briefly discusses the roles of UI/UX designers and their impact on the web design process.

User Interface (UI) involves shaping and producing the display of computer products, applications, or software. UI focuses on the design aspects of the software product. 

UI designers ensure that visuals, such as elements, transitions, and animations in products and services, function well and create a positive impression on users.

On the other hand, User Experience (UX) is a process involving research, development, and the creation of an interaction pattern that leaves a lasting impression on users accessing the software product, be it an application or a website. 

In their work, UX designers cover various areas in the product development process, including branding, usability, functionality, and design. 

In essence, UX design considers the entire user journey in interacting with our product or service.

Collaboration of UI and UX in Web Design

In the web design process, the roles of UI and UX designers are inseparable; they must work hand in hand. The applications we create should prioritize appearance and ease of use. 

Why is this crucial? If an application has a great appearance, cool animations, and attractive colors but is not responsive, it will provide a poor user experience.

Conversely, if an application is responsive, user-friendly, and easy to download but lacks an attractive appearance—uncoordinated text, improper button sizes—it will leave a negative and unsatisfactory impression on users. 

Therefore, UI and UX must work together to produce a harmonious product that helps users overcome challenges with a positive experience.

What a UX Designer Does

Specifically, a UX designer is responsible for developing strategies, testing, implementing, and analyzing the overall product or service. 

The first task of a UX designer is content strategy, focusing on customer analysis, content auditing and mapping, and competitor analysis. 

After this phase, a UX designer moves on to testing and prototyping, coordination and analysis, and consumer research.

What a UI Designer Does

A UI designer's role in the web design process focuses more on the specific aspects of the appearance of the product or service being developed. 

UI designers determine fonts, visual elements, and ensure that the appearance of components and pages aligns with the product's objectives. 

In short, UI designers are responsible for creating and maintaining brand style, visual design, interactive design, and responsive design. Each of these processes plays a role that interconnects with the others.

Skills Needed for a UI and UX Designer

To be involved in the web design process, both UI and UX designers must have several skills, including both soft and hard skills. 

These skills include wireframing/prototyping, user research, visual design, copywriting, and information architecture.

Future Prospects for UI and UX Designers

The rapid development of technology and digitization indirectly provides a bright future for UI and UX designers. According to the UX Design Institute, in 2021, 70 percent of managers expanded their design teams. 

Skills supporting both UI and UX designers will impact the increasing demand for these jobs.

There are many ways to become a UI/UX designer, from self-learning to taking UI/UX design classes. Currently, there are many resources available for learning or honing these skills.
